Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “We aim above the mark, to hit the mark.” New volunteers are welcome at Mid-State Literacy Council (MSLC). With our training, you can tutor an adult who is focused on passing the GED tests. Their goal is to gain their high school equivalency, the credential that qualifies them to apply for career oriented training programs in healthcare, the trades including welding, and entrance to the U.S. military. Enrollment continues to expand. With the support of 200 volunteers, the professional staff plan and implement instructional programs. We aim high, and students hit the mark.
It is my pleasure to introduce you to Bridget Schell, the new Executive Director. With my retirement approaching, it is my honor to thank you for supporting literacy. Bridget is excited to be promoted after coordinating the English Language Learning Program for the past 2 years, she shares, “I’m eager to implement what I have learned from non-profit directors and mentors here in Pennsylvania, New England, and abroad! Amy is leaving big shoes to fill, but with the support of exceptional volunteers and a dedicated staff, we will continue bringing community-based education to our neighbors in Centre and Clearfield counties.”
Please join us for a Book Fundraiser at The Squirrel & Acorn Bookshop, Saturday and Sunday, September 14-15th, 103 S. Allen St, State College. Your purchase will support the children’s book drive and adult literacy programs, thanks to Andrew Aschwanden who is donating 15% of every purchase. Saturday afternoon The Music Academy musicians will delight shoppers.
The Ron and Mary Maxwell Community Spelling Bee is live on Wednesday, September 25th, 6pm, via zoom and YouTube. Teams are signing up; three team members decide on the spelling. Please contact Mid-State Literacy Council to join a team! Funds raised support adult literacy programs.
You are invited to celebrate literacy with Amy Wilson, the Board of Directors, volunteers, students, friends and community members on Thursday, September 26th, open house 5pm-7pm at the Sydney Friedman Park, 241 S. Fraser St, State College, PA. In case of inclement weather, the celebration will be at St. Andrews Episcopal Church across the street in Room 325. Light refreshments.
Literacy includes reading, math, writing, English, and technology training to support access to employment. The Brookings Institution reported, “The U.S. economy is digitizing at an extremely rapid pace. American workplaces are increasing their use of technologies, and computer skills are needed across industries and employment positions.” Mid-State Literacy Council is expanding digital literacy instruction.
